Celebrating the unsung heroes: Britain’s railway workers

Kents Bank Station Library’s next ‘special’ open day is on Saturday October 12th. As well as re-dedicating a locomotive nameplate we’ll be displaying some of our extensive collection of books on the social history of railways – the people who worked on the railway in particular.

Come and have a browse – and a brew!

Very often the only time you hear about railwaymen and women is when there’s a strike – we take forgranted the difficult and often dangerous work that thousands of railway people do. And far too little has been written about them!

The Railway Library at Kents Bank has been building an extensive collection of books and magazines making the most of what has been published, going back to the 1880s. We have an archive of papers from REPTA – the Railway Employees’ Privilege Ticket Association, whose history goes back to 1893. The nameplate from diesel loco 47.156 (‘REPTA 1893 – 1993’) will be re-dedicated by former trustees of the association (which closed in 2023), on Saturday at 14.00.

Come along and join us – there will be tea and coffee, with biscuits…or bring your own brew can! Prizes for the most interesting brew (billy) can.

We will be open from 11.00 to 4.00 but may stay open for passing of steam special a bit later.
